“I Can’t Wait to be Back in Canada!” — Anabel Englund Chats Ahead of Montreal AIM Festival

You may know her by her smooth, sultry vocals that carried ‘Reverse Skydiving’ to the top of the charts back in 2013 — or perhaps for her wildly, playful and colourful performances as Hot Natured (ft. Lee Foss, Jamie Jones, Luca C & Ali Love). However you know singer-songwriter Anabel Englund, one thing is certain: the girl is a true shining star. Her work as both a solo artist and under Hot Natured features one-of-a-kind, jazz inspired vocals, backed by deeply emotive lyrics that leave listeners mesmerized. Not to mention, Englund owns the stage wherever she goes. Thus, we couldn’t have been more excited when we heard that Anabel would be performing alongside Lee Foss on July 15 at Montreal’s AIM Festival. But first, we had the chance to catch up with the New York-born superstar.

You come from a very musically-inclined family. As a child, were you gently nudged toward a career in the entertainment industry, or did it happen naturally?

It definitely happened naturally. I grew up around instruments being played and voices being sung constantly. I don’t remember the moment it happened, but I remember hearing myself and hearing I had a nice voice so it kind of grew from there.

If I can give someone even a minute of relief throughout his or her day by listening to my music, that would make me happy.

We’re anxiously awaiting your solo EP. Can you tell us anything about what you hope to accomplish with your first solo project?

Yeah I’m so excited for the world to hear my new music. I just want to help people feel something mostly. If I can give someone even a minute of relief throughout his or her day by listening to my music, that would make me happy. And obviously the more people to hear it, the better.

You have a super fun and vibrant style. When you’re dressing for a show, what are the three most important things that an outfit must do to make you feel good?

Awh thanks! 1st thing is I need to be able to move around and do whatever I want with my body (I tried wearing a dress the other night and it did not help me haha!) I love being able to do spontaneous things and I can’t do that freely unless I’m wearing something like shorts or a bodysuit.

2nd thing is I like to be bright & shiny! (wearing black on stage makes me feel bored)

3rd thing is I like to be tall (platforms are my fave)

You began working with Jamie Jones and Lee Foss in 2012. Were you already into the electronic music scene at the time, or did working with Hot Natured open up another genre of possibilities for you?

I definitely was into electronic music at that time. That’s actually how I met Lee — I went to one of his shows because I was a huge fan of his and Jamie’s music. I still am a fan, but now we are besties so it’s a little different 😉

You co-created the live electronic event called Gari Safari. What’s the ethos behind this showcase, and how is it unique from other live music experiences?

Yes I did. Gari Safari is about bringing your best most crazy self and letting it shine. It’s about embracing your inner animal and bringing it to the dance floor for a night of live vocals and driving beats. I think it’s unique because most of us sing and it could easily be a night of all our own music, which is super tasty and refreshing. My favourite part about it is spending the night getting to know the people there and where they come from, as well as singing on stage with my brother Jackson. It’s a truly different and beautiful experience.

As a performer who is constantly traveling from place to place, we imagine exhaustion (both mental and physical) kicks in at times. What do you do to ensure your mind and body stay in good spirits?

I make sure to have a routine. Even if that means just writing in my journal everyday. There is definitely a lot of space to have highs and lows but, to have a constant is very important. Even if it’s just a 10 minute meditation right when I wake up or to clear my mind or before I go to sleep.

I CANT WAIT TO BE BACK IN CANADA!!! I’m looking forward to seeing so many faces I’ve never seen before and look into the eyes of so many listeners on stage. Of course, eat tasty food and breathe some new air.

If it wasn’t a career in music, what’s another industry that you could foresee yourself thriving in?

Helping the animals, the ocean, the earth, the people. For sure.

Lastly, heading into AIM Festival – what are you most looking forward to about this Montreal festival?

I CANT WAIT TO BE BACK IN CANADA!!! I’m looking forward to seeing so many faces I’ve never seen before and look into the eyes of so many listeners on stage. Of course, eat tasty food and breathe some new air.
